Cloud File Storage Vs. Your Own Home Server

I am what most would call an early adopter when it comes to technology. I am also what some would consider an eccentric, I will argue that it is to my benefit but that is another topic. So when the whole Cloud File Storage thing first came out I was eager to try it out. My storage needs include business and personal, and I would prefer to have access to my data no matter where I am. WP Auto Backup to Rackspace Cloud Files

NOTE: This project has been revised a few times. You are better off going right to http://code.google.com/p/wordpressbackup/, this will ensure you have the latest version of the code.

What you need:
Rackspace Cloud Files and an API key
Ability to edit a bash script and a PHP file
Ability to create two cron jobs

What it will do:
Remove the previous days backups from the “files” directory
Backup your wp-config directory daily
Backup your WP MySQL database daily
Move both files to Rackspace Cloud Files

Mind Mapping and Brainstorming Software

I found a really cool web based software that allows you to do mind mapping and brainstorming. You can also share out your maps for other people to edit as well. It made me think of some people I know who are kind of like me that could benefit from using something like this. There are some paid plans but there is also a free one (that’s what I am using).

Free Web Design Resources

Someone asked me about web design in general and how to get started. Here are some of the tools I use during my coding sessions. Typically I am working with HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Javascript, AJAX and some random other languages when needed. This is just a real quick once over to introduce some resources and by no means is this the answer for all questions. These are just some of my solutions.

NAS Data Recovery

A few weeks ago my buddy Adam had a major issue with his 1TB Iomega NAS appliance. All of a sudden his data was just gone, all of it. He could see the drive and access it but there was no data. We talked a bit about ways he could try to recover the drive on a Windows box but none of the options were working. He spoke with Iomega and they said they could do the recovery… For a fee that is. Another option would have been a company like DriveSavers but they are expensive. I have used them before for a client on mission critical (OMG My entire company is on that drive and I don’t have a backup) issues and it was always in the 2-3K range.
